About Women's Addiction Treatment Program
Women experience addiction differently than men due to biological differences, trauma patterns, caregiving responsibilities, and social stigma. Trust SoCal's comprehensive women's addiction treatment program is specifically designed to address these unique factors and provide women with a treatment experience built around their needs, challenges, and strengths. Our program creates a safe, supportive environment where women can heal from trauma, address the shame and guilt associated with addiction, and rebuild their identity as mothers, partners, and individuals.
Biologically, women develop substance dependence faster than men—a phenomenon called telescoping. Women have lower body water content, different enzyme activity, and hormonal fluctuations that affect substance metabolism and how quickly tolerance and dependence develop. This means women often present for treatment with more severe addiction despite shorter histories of use. Our medical team understands these biological differences and tailors detox and medication management accordingly, ensuring women are safe and comfortable.
Trauma is a central issue in women's addiction treatment. Research consistently shows that women in treatment for substance use disorders report histories of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at significantly higher rates than their male counterparts. Domestic violence, childhood abuse, sexual assault, and human trafficking are common underlying causes. Our trauma-informed approach creates a safe therapeutic environment where women can process these experiences using evidence-based modalities including EMDR and Seeking Safety, without the risk of re-traumatization.
Childcare concerns represent one of the most significant barriers preventing women from entering treatment. Many women are the primary caregivers for their children and cannot envision stepping away. Our admissions team works with each mother to develop a comprehensive childcare plan, connect her with community resources, and address custody concerns so that logistical barriers do not prevent treatment. We also address the shame and guilt that many mothers feel about their addiction, which can be a powerful obstacle to recovery.
