What Is Sex/Pornography Addiction?
Sex and pornography addiction encompasses compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) -- recognized by the World Health Organization in the ICD-11 -- characterized by a persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges, resulting in repetitive sexual behavior that causes marked distress or significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, or occupational functioning. This includes compulsive use of pornography, compulsive sexual encounters, excessive use of sexual services, and persistent engagement in sexual behavior despite negative consequences.
The neurobiological basis of sex and pornography addiction closely parallels substance addiction. Sexual behavior and pornography viewing trigger powerful dopamine surges in the brain's reward system. With repeated exposure, particularly to the unlimited novelty of internet pornography, the brain develops tolerance -- requiring more extreme or novel sexual content to achieve the same level of arousal. This escalation pattern mirrors the dose escalation seen in drug addiction. High-speed internet pornography is particularly implicated because it provides an unprecedented level of novelty, variety, and accessibility that can overwhelm the brain's natural reward calibration.
