What Is Delta-8 THC Addiction?
Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8 THC) is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in trace amounts in the cannabis plant but now widely available through chemical conversion from hemp-derived CBD. Marketed as a "legal" and "milder" alternative to traditional Delta-9 THC marijuana, Delta-8 THC products have proliferated rapidly since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill created a regulatory loophole. Delta-8 THC is sold in vape cartridges, edibles, tinctures, and flower at gas stations, convenience stores, and online retailers, often without age verification or quality testing. Despite being marketed as safer, Delta-8 THC is a genuine psychoactive substance that produces intoxication, impairment, tolerance, dependence, and addiction.
The accessibility and perceived safety of Delta-8 THC have created a new pathway to cannabis addiction, particularly among adolescents and young adults who may view it as a low-risk product. The lack of regulation means that Delta-8 products frequently contain undisclosed contaminants, residual solvents from the chemical conversion process, and variable potency that can produce unexpectedly intense effects. Additionally, many individuals use Delta-8 THC as a bridge to or from traditional marijuana use, and chronic use produces the same pattern of tolerance, withdrawal, and compulsive use seen with any cannabinoid.
At Trust SoCal, we treat Delta-8 THC addiction with the same evidence-based approaches used for traditional cannabis use disorder, recognizing that the neurobiological mechanism of addiction is identical regardless of which THC isomer is involved.
