What Is Sedative-Hypnotic Medications (Benzodiazepines, Z-Drugs, Others) Addiction?
Sedative-hypnotic medications including benzodiazepines (alprazolam, diazepam, lorazepam), Z-drugs (zolpidem, zaleplon, zopiclone), barbiturates, and others are prescribed to treat insomnia, anxiety, and other conditions. These medications are safe and effective when used as directed for short-term periods under medical supervision. However, these drugs create rapid physical and psychological dependence, and prolonged use or non-medical use carries substantial risks. Sleeping pill addiction often begins with a legitimate prescription for insomnia but progresses as tolerance develops and doses escalate, or as the individual begins using sleeping pills for reasons beyond insomnia (for emotional numbing, anxiety management, or recreational purposes). The medication-induced dependence can become as severe as addiction to illicit drugs. Sleeping pill addiction is common and is sometimes overlooked by providers and patients because the medications are prescribed and considered "safe," despite their significant abuse potential and dangerous withdrawal. At Trust SoCal, we recognize sleeping pill addiction as a significant clinical problem and provide specialized treatment addressing the complex pharmacology of these drugs and the often underlying insomnia, anxiety, or other conditions.
