What Is Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Addiction?
Nitrous oxide (N2O), commonly known as laughing gas, is a colorless, odorless gas with anesthetic properties that has legitimate medical and dental uses at carefully controlled doses. In recent years, recreational use of nitrous oxide has increased substantially, particularly among young adults in club and party settings and through online markets selling canisters ("whippits") for supposed culinary use. The gas produces brief euphoria and dissociation when inhaled at recreational doses. Chronic recreational nitrous oxide abuse causes severe neurological damage through inactivation of vitamin B12 (cobalamin), essential for myelin formation and neurological function. The mechanism involves oxidation of cobalt at the center of the B12 molecule, rendering it unable to function as a cofactor in critical enzymatic reactions. This leads to subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord and brain, causing progressive irreversible neurological damage including paralysis, sensory loss, weakness, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric symptoms. Unlike many substances of abuse, nitrous oxide abuse is increasingly recognized in clinical settings and is an important but often overlooked source of neurological morbidity. At Trust SoCal, we provide specialized assessment and treatment for nitrous oxide addiction, including evaluation for neurological complications and linkage to neurological rehabilitation.
