What Is Social Media Addiction?
Social media addiction is a behavioral addiction characterized by excessive, compulsive use of social media platforms that interferes with daily functioning, relationships, work or school performance, and mental health. While not yet a formal DSM-5 diagnosis, social media addiction shares core features with recognized behavioral addictions and substance use disorders: tolerance (needing increasing amounts of social media engagement to achieve satisfaction), withdrawal (anxiety, irritability, and restlessness when unable to access platforms), loss of control (unsuccessful attempts to reduce use), and continued use despite negative consequences.
Social media platforms are engineered to be addictive, employing variable reward schedules (likes, comments, shares that arrive unpredictably), social comparison mechanisms, infinite scrolling, and notification systems designed to maximize engagement. These design features exploit the same dopamine-driven reward pathways targeted by addictive substances. Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable, with developing prefrontal cortices that limit impulse control and heightened sensitivity to social evaluation. The co-occurrence of social media addiction with substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, and body image disorders is increasingly recognized.
At Trust SoCal, we address social media addiction within our comprehensive behavioral health program, recognizing that digital compulsions often co-occur with substance use and mental health conditions that require integrated treatment.
