What Is Tianeptine Addiction?
Tianeptine is an atypical antidepressant medication approved in several countries outside the United States for treating major depression, but not approved by the FDA. The drug has complex pharmacology: at standard therapeutic doses, it inhibits opioid mu-receptors and delta-receptors (weakly) and at higher doses functions as an opioid agonist, creating opioid-like effects. This unique pharmacology has led to recreational abuse of tianeptine, which is marketed in the United States as a "nootropic," "dietary supplement," or "research chemical" under brand names including ZaZa Red, Tianna, Corepharma, and others, sold online without medical oversight. Users taking doses far exceeding therapeutic levels experience euphoria, sedation, pain relief, and opioid-like intoxication. Chronic abuse creates rapid physical and psychological dependence indistinguishable from opioid addiction. The withdrawal syndrome mirrors opioid withdrawal (dysphoria, anxiety, physical symptoms) and is medically dangerous at high doses. Importantly, naloxone (the opioid antagonist) does NOT reliably reverse tianeptine overdose, making overdoses particularly dangerous.
