About Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern behavioral therapy that helps individuals in addiction recovery develop psychological flexibility—the ability to be present, open to experience, and engaged in value-driven behavior even in the face of difficult thoughts and emotions. At Trust SoCal, our ACT-trained therapists guide clients away from the struggle to control or eliminate unwanted feelings and toward a life guided by personal values and meaningful action.
Traditional approaches to addiction often focus on suppressing cravings and avoiding triggers. ACT takes a fundamentally different stance: rather than fighting against difficult internal experiences, clients learn to accept them as natural parts of being human while choosing behaviors aligned with their deepest values. This approach is particularly powerful for individuals who feel trapped in a cycle of trying to control their thoughts and feelings through substance use.
