About Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive neuromodulation therapy that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific regions of the brain involved in mood regulation, impulse control, and reward processing. A magnetic coil placed against the scalp delivers focused pulses that pass through the skull and directly stimulate neurons in the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions that are underactive in individuals with depression and substance use disorders.
At Trust SoCal, TMS is offered as an adjunctive treatment within our comprehensive addiction program. Chronic substance use and depression both reduce activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) -- the brain region responsible for executive function, decision-making, and impulse control. By directly stimulating this region, TMS helps restore the neural circuits that addiction has disrupted, improving the brain's capacity for self-regulation, craving resistance, and emotional processing. Unlike medication, TMS does not circulate through the bloodstream and produces minimal systemic side effects. Sessions are conducted in our clinic, require no anesthesia, and allow clients to return to regular programming immediately afterward.
