About This Program
Men account for the majority of substance-related deaths, emergency department visits, and treatment admissions in the United States, yet they face significant cultural and psychological barriers to seeking and engaging in treatment. At Trust SoCal, our JCAHO-accredited treatment center in Fountain Valley, California, we offer a men's program that directly addresses the role that traditional masculine norms play in both the development of addiction and the resistance to getting help.
Traditional masculinity often teaches men to suppress emotions, project invulnerability, solve problems independently, and avoid asking for help under any circumstances. These expectations create conditions where men are more likely to self-medicate emotional pain with substances rather than express it, more likely to escalate use before acknowledging a problem, and less likely to seek treatment even when the consequences are severe. Our clinical team understands these dynamics and creates a therapeutic environment where men can safely begin to challenge the beliefs that keep them trapped.
Anger is one of the few emotions that traditional masculinity permits men to express, and as a result, unprocessed grief, shame, fear, and trauma often manifest as rage, aggression, or cold withdrawal. Our men's program places significant emphasis on emotional literacy, teaching men to identify, name, and process the full range of human emotions without relying on anger as a default. Group therapy among male peers is a powerful tool in this process, as men often find it easier to open up when surrounded by other men who are going through the same struggle.
Many men in treatment also carry shame around the role their addiction has played in failing their families, their careers, and their own self-image. The gap between who they believe they should be and who their addiction has made them can feel insurmountable. Our therapists help men process this shame constructively, rebuild a sense of identity grounded in values rather than performance, and develop the relational skills needed to repair damaged relationships. Trust SoCal's men's program in Fountain Valley also addresses the co-occurring conditions that frequently accompany men's addiction, including depression, anxiety, unresolved trauma, and ADHD. If you or a man you care about is struggling with addiction, call Trust SoCal today at (949) 280-8360 to learn how our program can help.
