About Recreational Therapy
Recreational therapy (also known as therapeutic recreation) is a systematic process that uses recreation and activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses, disabilities, or behavioral health conditions. In addiction treatment, recreational therapy serves a vital function: it helps clients rediscover the capacity for enjoyment and fulfillment without substances. Chronic substance use hijacks the brain's reward system, making it difficult to experience pleasure from normal activities -- a condition known as anhedonia. Recreational therapy directly addresses this by introducing structured, enjoyable activities that gradually restore the brain's ability to produce dopamine in response to natural rewards.
At Trust SoCal, our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) designs individualized recreational therapy programs that address each client's physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Activities are not merely diversionary -- they are clinically designed to build specific recovery skills including stress management, social interaction, emotional regulation, physical fitness, and leisure planning. Many individuals entering treatment have lost all hobbies, interests, and social activities outside of substance use. Recreational therapy helps them rebuild a lifestyle that supports sobriety by filling the void that substances leave behind with meaningful, rewarding activities.
