About Animal-Assisted Therapy
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) at Trust SoCal uses carefully trained therapy animals—primarily dogs—to facilitate emotional healing, reduce stress, and develop interpersonal skills in clients recovering from addiction. In structured AAT sessions, clients interact with animals in ways that promote connection, emotional expression, and social engagement, with a licensed therapist integrating animal interactions into the broader treatment plan.
Addiction often stems from relational trauma, attachment disruption, and fear of judgment. Animals offer something remarkable: unconditional acceptance without judgment or criticism. The act of caring for, petting, and bonding with a therapy animal activates oxytocin (the "bonding hormone"), reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), and provides a safe context for practicing trust and authentic connection. Many clients who have difficulty trusting humans find that animals provide a bridge back to healthy relating, rebuilding the relational capacity essential to long-term recovery.
