About Family Systems Therapy
Family Systems Therapy recognizes that addiction does not exist in isolation—it develops within and affects entire family systems. At Trust SoCal, our family systems-trained therapists work with clients and their families to identify and shift the dysfunctional patterns—enmeshment, scapegoating, emotional cutoff, enabling—that maintain addiction and prevent healing. By addressing these systemic patterns, we create conditions for sustainable recovery and healthier family relationships.
Addiction often reflects maladaptive family patterns: a child may use substances to regulate family anxiety or distract from conflict; a parent may enable substance use to maintain connection or control. Without addressing these systemic dynamics, individuals may achieve sobriety only to relapse into familiar patterns of relating. Family Systems Therapy helps families understand how each member's behavior maintains the system and facilitates shifts toward healthier, more autonomous, less rigidly role-bound functioning. Treatment includes individual work helping clients develop emotional maturity, coupled with family sessions that practice new ways of relating.
